Gryphon’s Sore Past Rams in Preseason Matchup 57-44

The Guelph women's basketball team topped the Ryerson Rams 57-44 tonight (Sept. 30) in preseason action. Ali Dzikowski led all scorers with 19 points, pacing the way for the Gryphon's victory.

With Dzikowski connecting on 50% of her shots, the Gryphons were able to take a 10 point lead into the fourth quarter and were never really challenged the rest of the way. Marlee Freeman added 11 off the bench, providing tough defence and giving the Gryphon's second unit some valuable leadership.

Guelph used the game to give all 16 players an opportunity to get some valuable game time experience, and the rookies came ready to play. Dana Van Balkom netted seven points in her debut with the Gryphons, and all the rookies showed what kind of heart they will bring to the Guelph squad.

Angela Tilk led the Rams with 13 points, while Ashley MacDonald netted nine in the defeat. The Rams were held to just 25% shooting, compared to 31% from Guelph. The Rams were also forced into committing a number of turnovers, with the Gryphon's collecting 15 steals on the night.

The first quarter saw Guelph take a one point lead thanks to a strong defensive effort. Guelph was able to stretch their lead to two at the break, thanks in large part to Dzikowski's two three-pointers in the closing minutes of the half.

The Gryphons took control in the third, outscoring the Rams by eight in the quarter to take a 42-32 lead into fourth. The quarter was highlighted by Freeman's runner in the lane that sent the crowd into frenzy. The game was closed out with the Guelph rookies showing solid poise and determination as they held of the Rams for the victory.

The next time the Gryphon's will be in action is Friday, October 28 in Guelph against Trinity Western. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00p.m.
