The Gryphon men's soccer team beat the Mustangs 1-0 this afternoon (Sept. 25) at the new Gryphon's soccer complex, upsetting the Mustangs for the first time this season.
The Gryphons move to 4-3-1 while the Mustangs retreat to 4-1-3.
The Gryphons applied ample pressure to the Mustangs defencive line early in the first half; however, the Mustangs continued to challenge which led to many possession transfers.
The Gryphons would receive a direct kick early in the first half, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. The Mustangs were also unable to exploit their free kick opportunities deep into the first half.
The game would go scoreless until the sixty-five minute mark when Tim Flynn (Scarborough, ON) drove a low ball past the Mustangs goal tender.
The final minutes of the game were tense, as the Mustangs made an attempt to rally a comeback. The Gryphons held on and continued to execute smart passing techniques that would keep the Mustangs from tying the game.
"Western is ranked fifth in the country and have been unbeaten until today. The boys knew they had a tough game coming in, but we also knew we had the players to pull out a win," said Head Coach Keith Mason. "Our team defended well, attacked well, especially in the second half and deserved today's win."
