Gryphon defence shines but can't get past York, 2-1

The Guelph Gryphons fell to the York Lions 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Toronto. The Gryphon defence played outstanding but couldn't get past the reigning national champions.

Guelph came into the game against the reigning national champions with a set game plan that clearly frustrated York, and paid off offensively within 10 minutes of play.

Guelph's top goal scorer, Robbie Murphy (Ottawa) scored his fifth goal of the season when he was sent in on goal by Ricky Maimonis; Murphy calmly slotted the ball into the net past the onrushing York keeper. The impact of the goal was great for Murphy, as three of his Canada team mates from the recent FISU Games in China were on the field for York, including the goalkeeper.

For the majority of the first half, Guelph continued to frustrate York with their impressive defending, and created two more clear goal-scoring chances offensively with both Dena Iezady and Murphy going close to scoring. Unfortunately, York's top OUA goal-scorer Alon Badat took advantage of a rare Guelph mistake in the 38th minute and tied the game, mere minutes after Guelph goalkeeper Chad Paparoni had made two nice saves.

The halftime break clearly energized the York team, and they piled on the pressure in the second half; the Guelph defence stayed resolute until the 74th minute when Adrian Pena scored what would be the game winner.

Guelph continued their good play towards the end of the game, but could not maintain their composure where it truly mattered, and though they defended well, went home empty-handed

Up next is a game this Wednesday night in Guelph against McMaster.
