Feb. 5: Western 82 – Guelph 60
LONDON – The women's basketball team dropped an 82-60 game to the CIS No. 3 Western Mustangs this afternoon at Alumni Hall in London. The Gryphons record drops to 8-10 on the season, while the Mustangs improve to 15-3.
The Mustangs defensive pressure forced the Gryphon's offence to struggle today as Guelph shot a mere 28.6 percent from the field (20-of-70) compared to Westerns 42 percent.
The first quarter remained close as the Mustangs led by only by only four points (18-14). In the second quarter, the Mustang defense held the Gryphons to a mere eight points and charged ahead offensively. Western led 38-22 at half.
The Gryphons were able to capitalize on offensive opportunities in the third quarter outscoring the Mustangs 22-18, but the Mustangs still held the lead 56-44. In the fourth the Mustangs got hot and lit up the scoreboard and were successful on 11 of their 13 fourth-quarter foul line attempts, claiming the 82-60 victory.
Leading the Gryphons in scoring was Alex Yallin (Port Colborne, Ont.) with 15 points while Jasmine Douglas (Guelph, Ont.) earned a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Up next the Gryphons return home to the W.F. Mitchell Centre this week to host the Laurier Golden Hawks on February 9. Game time is 6:00 p.m .
