Gryphons take down Lancers in Overtime


Feb. 3: Guelph 97 – Windsor 94

WINDSOR - The Gryphon men's basketball team picked up a huge 97-94 overtime victory over the Windsor Lancers tonight at the St. Denis Centre in Windsor. The win advances the Gryphon record to 7-10.

The game was a re-scheduled contest that was postponed due to weather from the previous night.

Both teams came out flat as the first quarter finished 14-13 in favour of the Gryphons. The second quarter continued to remain close as neither team was able to pull away from the other. Guelph led 41-38 at the break.

After half, both teams picked up their offensive production as the game remained close. With the Gryphons leading 65-60 heading in the final quarter, the Lancers battled back to tie the game late in the quarter. With the Gryphons leading by three with seconds remaining, the Lancers knocked down a deep three to send the game into overtime.

The extra frame was controlled by the Gryphons as they held of the Lancer attack to earn the hard fought 97-94 overtime win.
 

The Gryphons were led by Dan McCarthy with a season high 38 points including 6-for-7 from three point range. He also grabbed nine rebounds.  Michael Petrella (Brantford, Ont.) contributed 26 points while Jonathan Moscatelli and Kevin Camerson tallied 11 points in the win.

The Gryphons are back on the road this Saturday in London against the Western Mustangs. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
