Gryphons top Lions 73-65, Goodhoofd contributes 25

The Gryphon women's basketball team recorded its second straight win in 24 hours this evening (Dec. 3) after beating the Lions 73-65.
 
With the win, the Gryphons advance to 4-4 in the OUA west, while the Lions drop to 4-4 in the OUA east.
 
Kayla Goodhoofd (Oakville, ON) was the leading point getter for the Gyphons, posting up an impressive 25 points. Samantha Russell (Paradise Valley, AZ) contributed 13 and Marlee Freeman (Orillia, ON) chipped in for 11 points respectively.
 
In the first quarter, the Lions opened up the game with a three-point lead, however, the Gryphons fought back hard and quickly tied it up.
 
Both sides played hard and tried to gain dominance of the ball.  With both teams hot on the heels of each other, the scored for the first quarter closed at a 17-17 tie.
 
When the two teams returned to the court in the second quarter the Lions appeared to be hibernating as the Gryphons took control of the match.
 
The Gryphons held a 31-22 lead at the half.
 
The Gryphons maintained the lead, but due to a technical foul charged to Gryphons coach Tom O'Brien, the Lions sunk two foul shots to reclaim the scoreboard, 36-35.
 
The Gryphons took the lead back with a three-pointer early on, and from there they did not let up.  With aggressive, fast-paced play, the Gryphons pulled ahead.  After a series of foul shots and good scoring chances, the Gryphons would close out the Lions with the win. 
 
The Gryphons will rest over the holiday, but will hit the court again when they take on the Badgers, January 4, 2012 at 6:00 p.m.
