Gryphons clip Voyageurs, 79-76
Â
SUDBURY, ON - It was a game that came down to the very last seconds, as the Guelph Gryphons defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 79-76.
Â
In the end Guelph was able to hit 12-22 (55%) of their 3-pointers, as Laurentian failed to keep up.
Â
The Voyageurs opened up the game with a solid first quarter, getting production from five different players. The second quarter was a lot closer, as both teams went back and forth in scoring and defensive stops.
Â
The Gryphons hit 6-11 three-pointers in the first two quarters, but were down at the half to the Voyageurs 34-33. Kareem Malcolm (Brampton, ON) scored 9 of his eventual 19 points in the first two quarters, leading his team at the half.
Â
Guelph came out of the half on fire, outscoring the home side 27-17 in the frame. Both teams shared runs, but it was a balanced effort from the Gryphons that saw them take a 60-53 lead into the fourth.
Â
The final quarter was a nail biter, as the Voyageurs clawed their way back into the game. Coming down to free throws, Laurentian was never able to take the lead back.
Â
The Gryphons were lead by Burlington native Zachary Angus, who went off for 14 points in the fourth (capping off a 21-point half). Laurentian's Hull sparked the comeback with multiple breakaway dunks, and an "and-1" play to bring the home team with three points. Unfortunately on the next trip down, in what appeared to be a debatable call, Hull was called for his fifth and final foul. The remaining 3 minutes of play went back and forth, with Laurentian hitting shots but Guelph converting on their free throws. Isiah Pasquale (Victoria, BC) completed a three-point play with 1.9 to bring the Voyageurs within one, but they weren't able to walk away with the victory in the end.
Â
The Voyageurs' Mike Hull (Victoria, BC) had a monstrous game, filling out the stat sheet with: 21 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. Laurentian played a strong first half, but were not able to maintain the same effort, losing the game in the final 20 minutes.
Â
Alex Ratte (Ottawa, ON) also contributed 17 points and 4 rebounds for the home team.
Â
Guelph also got 16 points and 8 rebounds out of their hometown Daniel McCarthy.
