Tonight (Nov. 19) at the W.F. Mitchell Centre, the Guelph Gryphon's men's team showed that they have the scoring ability to compete with anyone, and the three-point shot appears to be their primary weapon in the guard heavy rotation.

The Gryphon's used a 37 point third quarter to blow open the game, and finished with an 89-71 victory over the visiting Toronto Varsity blues. With the win, Guelph improves to 3-1, while Toronto drops to 1-3 on the season.

Leading the Gryphon's was Daniel McCarthy (Guelph, ON), going for 22 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists, all game highs. Zachary Angus (Burlington, ON) added 20 points on 4-5 shooting from deep, while 6 foot guard Kareem Malcolm (Brampton, ON) added 18 points to go along with two blocks.

Drazen Glisic (Sarajevo, BIH) paced the Blues with 16 points, while Arun Kumar (Hamilton, ON) added 13 points. Leading scorer Alex Hill (Toronto, ON) was held off the scoreboard in the first half, and finished the game with eight points. The CIS leading three point team was held to just 14% on threes thanks to a strong defensive effort by Guelph.

Toronto started off the game with a strong showing, leading for a short while before McCarthy took control of the game. Halfway through the period, McCarthy put the offense on his back, scoring seven straight points to get Guelph back out in from. Eric McDonald (Camiachie, ON), a first year guard, added five points in the opening quarter to give the Gryphon's a 21-13 lead.

Guelph extended their lead to 30-19 halfway through the second, with McCarthy scoring 15 first half points. Toronto's Kumar did everything he could to keep the Blues in the game, racking up 11 points in the first half.

In the third quarter, Guelph completely took control of the game, outscoring the Blues 37-19 in the quarter. Toronto closed the halftime deficit to 43-35, until McCarthy's three began the Gryphon three-point onslaught. Malcolm was the key to Guelph's attack, notching 13 points in the quarter, while Angus shot an incredible 3-3 in the quarter for 11 points. As a team, the Gryphon's shot 6-8 from three in the quarter, and where never seriously challenged in the fourth.

The Gryphon's will look to make it two in a row when they take on the visiting Carleton Ravens Saturday November, 25 at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
