The Gryphon men's soccer team matched up against the Marauders this afternoon (Oct. 9) at Ron Joyce Stadium, for the second time this season, and tied 1-1. The Gryphons fall to 7-3-2, while the Marauders advance to 7-2-3 in the OUA West Divison.
Gryphon midfielder
Brenden Springer (Burlington, ON) scored the loan goal for Guelph.
The two teams entered the contest as the top two teams in the OUA West, McMaster in first and Guelph second.
The first half started slowly for both teams, but as the half wore on, the Marauders began to assert themselves and controled much of the possession. Gryphon goalkeeper,
Chad Paparoni handled the early McMaster chances well, but there was nothing the tender could do about the Marauders goal - Guelph reacted slowly from a Mac corner, which allowed their captain to float a cross into the box, which eluded everyone and flew into the top corner of the goal.
McMaster continued to control possession after the goal and went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Gryphons came out battling and worked their way back into the game with both sides creating good scoring chances. As the game wound down, Guelph finally struck. Captain
Robert Murphy won an aerial challenge with a McMaster defnder and then took the ball to the edge of the 18-yard box, and found T
Timothy Flynn with a ball across the box, who then touched the ball on to Brendan Springer. Springer dropped an unstoppable drive into the bottom left corner of the McMaster goal, tying the game with less than five minutes to play.
The final five minutes of regular time were frantic, but when the final whistle blew, the teams shared the points and can be proud of battling for 90 minutes in unseasonably warm temperatures
The Gryphons will travel to London Saturday, October 15 to face off against rival Mustangs at 3:15 p.m.
