Gryphons face Golden Hawks in crucial contest

The Guelph Gryphons (2-5) enter Saturday's game looking to close out the season on a high note and hopefully punch a ticket to the playoffs when they host the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks (3-4).  Heading into the playoff, only one spot remains up for grabs and the Gryphons are fighting for it.

The Gryphons and Golden Hawks are both vying for the remaining playoff berth in the OUA. If Laurier wins on Saturday they'll take the leagues sixth and final playoff spot.  However if Guelph wins the game they also need the Waterloo Warriors (0-7) to defeat the Toronto Varsity Blues (2-5) to ensure their post-season spot.

The Western Mustangs have already clinched the top-spot, and are guaranteed to host a Yates Cup semi-final match on November 5. McMaster (6-1) and Ottawa (5-2) have the potential to determine second place when they go head-to-head on Saturday. Both teams will be fighting for a quarter-final bye and the right to host a semi-final game. The Queen's Gaels (5-2) have earned a spot and will host a quarter-final, but their opponent has yet to be determined. Windsor (4-3) is guaranteed the No. 5 seed, but will be on the road for a quarter-final. Laurier and Guelph are vying for the remaining playoff position. Toronto, York, and Waterloo have officially been eliminated from playoff contention. For full playoff scenarios and the implications of this weekend's games, please click here.

Guelph comes in after blowing out the York Lions last weekend in a rain soaked matchup, and will look to even their home record to 2-2 for the season. Laurier enters the game after last weekend's humbling loss to McMaster, will surely look to make a statement against a gritty Gryphon's squad.

What To Look For: Gryphon Offense
Rookie Quarterback Jazz Lindsey (Markham, Ont.) continues to improve with each snap under center. Against York Lindsey completed 50% of his passes in windy conditions for 207 yards and three touchdowns. Lindsey's brother, Saxon, has seen his production spike since Jazz took over as the primary signal caller, collecting five touchdowns since the QB change. Fifth year receiver Jedd Gardner (Niagara Falls, Ont.) has also had a late season resurgence, and will no doubt be looking to end his Gryphon career with a final big game at home.  On Saturday, Gardner will be likely to break another Gryphon record this season.  He enters the game having caught 145 passes, one less than Dan Tocher who caught 144 in his five-year career.

What To Look For: Gryphon Defence
The Gryphon defence has continued to impress throughout the season, and has kept Guelph in a number of games this season. Against York, the defence help the Lions to a mere 144 total yards, forcing three sacks and an interception. They will have their hands filled against the pass-happy Hawks, but with the talent found in the Guelph secondary, Laurier should think twice before committing to the throwing game. Linebacker Jake Reinhart continues to have a career season, currently ranking second in total tackles with 56 on the season.

What To Look For: Hawks Offense
The number one focus for the Gryphon's defence will be quarterback Shane Kelly, who has averaged 293 passing yards per game this season, ranking third in the CIS. Laurier comes in as the second highest scoring team in the CIS, due in large part to their air attack. If Guelph can keep the Laurier receivers in check, Laurier will be forced to utilize their running game, which is not nearly as strong.

What To Look For: Hawk Defence
Laurier is currently the leader in total tackles, with 416 on the season thus far. They are however coming off a tough loss to McMaster where they gave up over 400 yards on the day. Guelph will be looking for similar results, and with their passing game clicking late in the season, expect this game to be a shootout with a number of passing plays for each team. This game could very well come down to whichever team's defence can limit the opposing offence to the least amount of damage.
