Gryphons Dominate Over Golden Hawks With 2-0 Win

The Guelph Gryphons and the Laurier Golden Hawks matched up in Guelph this afternoon (Oct. 2) for an intense game that ended 2-0 in Guelph's favour.

The Gryphons add another win to the standings with 6-3-1 – now in third position in their division, and the Golden Hawks drop 2-5-3 to sit in seventh.

The game started out with a bang only four minutes in when Robert Murphy (Ottawa, ON) broke away from Hawk defence in his usual fashion, and fired in the Gryphon's first goal of the match. He nearly followed his first goal with another only minutes later but Laurier goal-keep Brett Harrington (Tillsonburg, ON) managed to deflect it out. Murphy is now the all-time leading Gryphon goal scorer. He entered the game tied with Tony Zanini on 23 goals, and now is in first place with 25 goals, including 10 this season.

Gryphon defense was extremely strong this game and cut Laurier's attacks before they could gain any momentum. Jacob Stolle (Stittsville, ON) who traditionally plays defense was moved up to a forward position to make up for some missing Gryphon players. He filled the role exceptionally well and was the power behind the second Guelph goal. After some action outside the Hawk's net Stolle stole the ball off of their defense and crossed it to Murphy who was waiting out front the net. Murphy sent it in to strengthen the Gryphon lead.

Laurier came into the second half fighting hard to catch up and managed to infiltrate Guelph's defense a number of times creating some close-goal scares. The Gryphons returned the pressure with a number of attacks on Laurier's net but couldn't break through Harrington. A final scary moment of the match for the Gryphons occurred after a free kick was given to Hawk Donald Chmura (Waterloo, ON) right outside Guelph's net – but he hit the top post. The game finished 2-0 in Guelph's favour.

The Gryphons next play the Brock Badgers on October 7, in St. Catharines. The game begins at 3:15pm.
