The Gryphons women's soccer team took on the Lions at the Gryphons Soccer Complex this afternoon (Oct. 16), and after a 90 minute battle in cold, wet, windy weather, walked away tied 0-0.
Â
The Gryphons drop to 4-6-2 while the Lions advance to 4-3-5 in the OUA West division.
Â
Megan Kilmas (Russell, ON) earned her second consecutive shutout for the Gryphons, and Courtney Whiteside played another exceptional game, after scoring a pair of goals against the Mustangs the day before (Oct. 15).
Â
Guelph controlled the majority of the game, but the Gryphons offence was unable to capitalize on Lions mistakes. Overall, the Gryphons had six chances, but came up short every time.
Â
"Today we played a very competitive game and created a lot of scoring chances," said head coach Randy Ragan. "We have moved from a single central striker, to twin strikers in an effort to create more scoring opportunities"
Â
During the first half, it looked like Guelph would take the lead when Rachel Rennick (Toronto, ON) broke away from the pack, going one-on-one with the Lions goal-keep; however, she was unable to beat Sarah Fiorini (Newmarket, ON) and the game would remain deadlocked at 0-0.
Â
In the second half, the Lions had a difficult time carrying the ball deep into Gryphon territory. Melissa Corso (Unionville, ON) with help from Danielle Naylor (Puslinch, ON) played outstanding defence, and prevented Lions strikers from attacking.
Â
The Gryphons put forth a valiant effort in today's game and hope to face off against the Lions in the OUA playoffs.
Â
The Lancers will travel to Guelph to match up agains the Gryphons on Saturday, October 22. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at the new Gryphons Soccer Complex.Â
