Guelph 3 vs. York 0 - 25-15, 25-14, 25-19
The University of Guelph women's volleyball team defeated the East Division leading York Lions 3-0 tonight at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Center.
Guelph was up to the challenge right from the start against York in moving to 13-3 on the year. The first set was close through 11 points before the Gryphons went on a 5 point run and continued to expand the lead to win 25-15. Set 2 was similar to the first with Guelph leading 16-10 at the second technical timeout before increasing the lead to 10 points later on to win 25-14. The third set was a battle in the first half but at 14-13 York, the Gryphons again put together a 5 point run to take control of the set. Some York mistakes near the end sealed the Guelph victory with a 25-19 win.
"Our defense and blocking really were the deciding factor tonight. We got some breaks and dug some balls in scramble situations that really showed our desire to win tonight," said coach Paul Funk.
The Gryphons had great balance in attack again tonight with
Kylen Van Osch (9 kills, 1 ace, 1 block) with 11 points,
Erinn Bickle (5 kills, 4 blocks),
Devon Jones (7 kills, 1 ace, 1 block) and
Brooke Lloyd (7 kills, 1 ace, 1 block) with 9 points each, and
Claire Sandor with 8 points (7 kills, 1 ace).
Guelph will wrap up its regular season home schedule with
Senior Night next Saturday at 6pm against the McMaster Marauders.
