Jan. 26: Brock 76 – Guelph 66
GUELPH – The Gryphon men's basketball team were dealt a 76-66 loss tonight at the hands of the Brock Badgers in the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre. The Gryphons fall to 5-10 on the season while the Badgers move to 8-7.
The Gryphons were led by Michael Petrella's (Brantford, Ont.) 15 points, while Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) added 12. Jerald Greenidge (Brampton, Ont.) added nine points to go with his game high 12 rebounds.
Mike Cruickshank led the Badgers with a game high 22 points. Andrew Kraus added 15 points while Andrew Ferguson netted 11 points for the victory.
The game started off rough for both teams, as neither team could buy a basket. The first quarter ended with the Badgers leading 10-9, with Guelph committing a number of costly turnovers. The Gryphons couldn't hit a three in the first quarter, but Brock was equally inefficient, shooting 26% for the quarter.
In the second quarter, both teams were able to hit their stride, with Guelph's Kevin Cameron leading the way, netting seven in the quarter. Guelph was able to cut down their turnovers while turning up the defensive pressure on the Badgers, trailing the Badgers 33-31 at halftime.
The Badgers put the Gryphons away in the third, outscoring the Guelph squad 22-15 in the quarter to take a 55-46 lead heading into the fourth. Both teams traded three's for most of the quarter, but the Badgers were able to take advantage of their trips to the free throw line, while the Gryphons struggled with their freebies. The final quarter saw the Gryphons close the game to 65-60 with four minutes to go, but they couldn't get any closer.
The Gryphons will hope to change their luck on the road when they take on the McMaster Marauders January 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 2pm.
