Jan. 22: Guelph 87 - Waterloo 80
WATERLOO – The Waterloo Warriors could not find a way to stop Micheal Petrella (Brantford, Ont.) as the Gryphon men's basketball team ended up on the winning side of an 87-80 final this afternoon at the PAC gym in Waterloo.
The Gryphons move to 5-9 in the season, completing their second victory of the regular season over the Warriors. Last time these two teams played, earlier in January, Petrella went off for 37 points. Tonight he finished with 32 points on 12-for-19 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Overall the Gryphons shot an impressive 78.9 percent from the charity stripe.
Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) finished with 18 points while rookie George Mason (Orillia, Ont.) chipped in with 11 points.
Overall the Gryphons finished at 42.1 percent (24-57) from the field while the Warriors were 47.6 (30-63). Both teams grabbed 32 rebounds.
Guelph will return to the Mitchell Centre this week for their first regular season match-up against the Brock Badgers on Wednesday night. Tip off will be at 8:00 p.m.
