Golden Hawks upend Gryphons

Jan. 19: Laurier 64 – Guelph 46

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphon women's basketball team dropped a 64-46 game tonight to the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo. Laurier outscored Guelph 22-13 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. The Gryphons fall to 7-6 on the season while the Golden Hawks improve to 10-3.

The teams battled for the lead in the first quarter with the Hawks grabbing a slim 16-13 lead towards to end of the quarter, thanks in large part to five points off of free-throws. Both teams had a relatively slow start to the second quarter, but after a Guelph timeout midway through the quarter, Laurier stretched their lead, using Guelph turnovers to their advantage heading into the halftime break.

At the start of the second half Laurier looked to be pulling away, as they went on a 5-0 run to start the quarter. However, Guelph was able to battle back outscoring Laurier 10-4 over the remaining quarter.  The fourth quarter saw Laurier finish strong, quelling Guelph's attempted comeback with a 22-13 quarter.

The Gryphons shot 32 percent from the field and grabbed 34 rebounds while Laurier shot 28.6 percent from the field and pulled down 45 boards. The Golden Hawks took advantage of Guelph's turnovers to the tune of 25 points. In total Guelph had 29 turnovers.

Alex Yallin (Port Colborne, Ont.) was the lone Gryphon to score double digits with 11 points while Jasmine Douglas (Guelph, Ont.) scored eight points and seven rebounds.

The Gryphons are on the road again this weekend at Waterloo on Saturday (Jan. 22) at 1:00 p.m.
