Jan. 19: Laurier 87 – Guelph 75
WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphon men's basketball team fell 87-75 on the road tonight to the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo. The Gryphons fall to 4-9 on the season and Laurier advances to 9-4.
Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) led the Gryphons with 24 points and eight rebounds while Michael Petrella (Brantford, Ont.) scored 17 points.
The Gryphons weren't able to stop Laurier's Gale Harrison who scored a game-high 38 points and grabbed nine rebounds. He went 11-for-12 from the free throw line and 12-for-20 from the field.
After being down 22-5 at the end of the first quarter the Gryphons battled back in the second quarter. The second quarter saw Guelph pull themselves back into the game thanks to a 21-11 advantage that allowed Guelph to pull back within seven points going into the locker room.
The third was a closely fought quarter, which ended with Laurier padding its lead with four points in 14 seconds courtesy of Maxwell Allin (Chatham, Ont.). Harrison led the Golden Hawks in the final quarter, scoring 15 of Laurier's 27 points to carry the Golden Hawks to the victory.
The Gryphons shot 37.3 percent (25-67) from the field and grabbed 30 rebounds while Laurier shot 45 (29-64) percent from the field and pulled down 47 rebounds. The Hawks also managed to tally six blocks to Guelph's 0.
The Gryphons are on the road again this weekend at Waterloo on Saturday (Jan. 22) at 3:00 p.m.
