The Gryphons drop to 0-2 after the start of regular season action this weekend.
During the first half, the game was played back and forth between each side, with both teams having a number of opportunities on goal. New Gryphon goalie
Chad Paparoni (Burlington, Ont.) continued to impress with his determination and refusal to give up any ball.
Ben Ragan (Rockwood, Ont.) and
David Canavan (Niagara Falls, Ont.) helped control the Gryphon end, pushing the ball into Mustang territory.
Colin MacMillan (Newmarket ON) received many of these passes, but without enough support from his offensive teammates, he was unable to turn them into goals.
The second half brought a lot of frustration for the Gryphons. Western midfielder Vince Caminiti (London, Ont.) continually harassed Gryphon players and had a number of opportunities on Gryphon net. Then, 55 minutes into the game Western's Eric Amato (Toronto) took advantage of a preoccupied Paparoni who had just deflected a shot, and fired the ball into the far corner of the net.
Gryphon midfielder
Brenden Springer (Burlington, Ont.) was subbed in during the second half and made his presence known. He was quick and accurate and set up a number of possible assists to the offensive line. Unfortunately, the Gryphons were unable to bring in a goal to tie up the match and Western was able to keep their lead, taking home a 1-0 win.
The Gryphons next play the Waterloo Warriors at home in Guelph at the Alumni Stadium on Sept. 11th. The game will begin at 3:15 pm.
