Lancers beat Gryphons 1-0 with first half goal

The Guelph Gryphon's men's team took on the Windsor Lancers Sept. 4th at the Alumni Stadium in Guelph. The match finished 1-0 in the Lancer's favour.

The first half was well matched between the two teams, with a number of close opportunities to score on net by each. Colin MacMillan (Newmarket, ON) handed out a number of shots and potential assists in the Windsor end although none were successful.  Ben Ragan (Guelph, ON) led the defensive side of the Gryphons, putting a stop to almost all attempts at Guelph goal. The game became tense after a number of controversial referee calls and some apparent arguments between the officials and the Guelph players, which resulted in three yellow cards for the Gryphons across the half.

Windsor took the lead in the 44th minute of the game when Ryan Wise (St. Thomas, ON) took control of the ball in a time of confusion and began racing towards Guelph goal. Ragan raced beside Wise, but expecting a referee call, did not keep up and Wise was able to rip the ball into the Gryphon net.

The Gryphons fought hard through the second half trying to tie up the game.  Guelph's rookie goal-keep Chad Paparoni  (Burlington, ON) made an impressive save against Windsor's Andre Lopes (Kitchener, ON) after he broke through Gryphon defence and tried to fire a goal. The Gryphons will be sure to see good things from Paparoni this season.

As the game came closer to the end tensions were rising once again from both the crowd and the players.  The Gryphons were desperate to even up the score and the Lancers were fighting to keep their lead.   Guelph player Jurgen Koehler (Guelph, ON) nearly gave the Gryphons what they wanted in the last minutes of the game when he went firing around the corner of the Windsor net, but strong winds lifted the ball and it skimmed just over the top. The game ended in a disappointing 0-1 for the Gryphons.

The Guelph Gryphon's men's team next play tomorrow, Sept. 5th at Varsity Field in Guelph, against the Western Mustangs. The game is to start at 3:15.
