Gryphons suffer a 3-0 loss to Marauders

The Guelph Gryphon men's team lost their fifth game of the regular season to the McMaster Marauders this afternoon (Sept 19) in Guelph. It brings the Marauder's standing up to 3-2-1, and keeps the Gryphons at a disappointing 0-0-5.

During the first half the Gryphons dominated offensively, despite a Marauder goal by Chinomnso Nwamadi (Brampton, ON) 20 minutes into the game. The Gryphons had six shots on net while the Marauders had no official shots on net besides their only goal. Colin McMillan (Newmarket, ON) had a number of shots on net, many of them stopped by the Marauders relentless goal-keep Matt Grant (Brampton, ON).

Guelph's offence showed some improvement from previous games this season during the first half. With help from Brendan Springer (Burlington, ON), much of the game was played in the Marauder's end. The Gryphons were desperately fighting to not only even up this game, but break their losing streak of the regular season so far.  All that was needed was a goal, but a lack of communication seemed to stop them from breaking through.

The second half brought an upsetting finish for the Gryphons. 52 minutes into the game Marauder player Anthony Costa (Stoney Creek, ON) took a penalty shot set up right in front of Gryphon net. He fired a low, direct corner shot, and Gryphon goal keep Chad Paparoni (Burlington, ON) didn't have a chance. Guelph continued to have a number of good opportunities on net, but they were unable to make anything of it.

The final blow came with only minutes left in the game, when Guelph defence crumbled forcing Paparoni to leave the goal, and McMaster's Ivan Stojakovic (Stoney Creek, ON) gained control of the ball and took advantage of the open net. He took his time and fired a direct shot, sealing the Gryphon fate with a 3-0 loss.

Up next, the Gryphons will be travelling to Windsor to play a match against the Windsor Lancers on Sept. 25th with the game beginning at 3:15pm.
