GUELPH, Ont. The women's hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 3-0 this afternoon at the Gryphon Centre.
Victoria Woods (Orangeville, Ont.), Erin Small (Pickering, Ont.) and rookie Kaitlyn Mora (Guelph, Ont.) would all score goals during the game; with assists from Tayne Hewer (Barrie, Ont.) and Jessica Zerafa (Mississauga, Ont.). Danielle Skoufranis (Thornhill, Ont.) stopped 26 shots in her second straight start at goal for the Gryphons.
The win moves Guelph's record to 6-2-0.
In the first period, right-wing Victoria Woods scored the first goal of the game at 7:37 with assists from Tayne Hewer and Erin Small. Guelph came off the first goal strong and confident, leaving Windsor unable to keep up with their offence.
Windsor almost scored on a power play in the first period, however they failed to get it together. This allowed Gryphon forward, Erin Small to capitalize on the opportunity, and score a short-handed goal for Guelph at 19:18, with Tayne Hewer's second assist of the game.
Within the first five minutes in the second period, the Gryphon's offence was on guard, with forward Tamara Bell putting the heat on and just shy of scoring but hitting it off the post. Throughout the rest of the period, Guelph's defence would remain impenetrable.
Windsor's Candace Rapchak (Stoney Point, Ont.) worked hard to get the puck in the Guelph zone throughout the period; along with Candice Chevalier (Essex, Ont.) who had a great scoring opportunity, however failed to follow through on the goal. First year forward, Krysten Bartolotti (Toronto, Ont.) also played a great offence during the period.
In the third period, the Lancers would find themselves in not one, but two power play opportunities at less than four minutes into the game. The power plays were back-to-back with penalties to Guelph's Samantha Ryder and Dayna Kanis. However the puck still found itself in the Lancers' zone, allowing Kaitlyn Mora to find the net with a beautiful short-handed goal, with an assist from Jessica Zerafa.
The Gryphon women will be taking on the Western Mustangs tomorrow (Nov. 7) at 2pm at the Gryphon Centre.
