Nov. 27: Guelph 66 – York 52
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphon's women's basketball team ran their home record to a perfect 4-0 on route to a 66-52 triumph over the York Lions Saturday night. The Gryphons move to 5-3 on the season.
Defence was once again key to the Gryphon victory, as they held their opponents to 23% shooting.
Samantha Russell (Paradise Valley, AZ) once again led the Gryphon's posting a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Russell started the game strong with 10 first quarter points, and finished off the Lions closing the game with nine points in the final quarter.
Jasmine Douglas (Guelph, Ont.) continued her dominance against opposing bigs, posting 13 points and 13 rebounds, while blocking three shots. Kara Muhlhausen added six points and eight rebounds.
Guelph was in a nail biter entering halftime, leading 27-21 after a sloppy second half. Neither team was able to separate themselves from the other as both defences were forcing tough shots.
The third quarter was all Gryphon's as they outscored the Lions by 10, and were never seriously threatened for the remainder of the game.
Kate Mowat lead the Loins with 10 points, while Kara Smith added nine. Leading scorer Brittany Szockyj saw her four game 20 point streak ended by the tough Gryphon defence. She netted seven in the defeat.
The Gryphon's enter the Holiday break with a 5-3 record. Their next action is scheduled for January 7
th at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. Tipoff is scheduled for 6pm.
