Gryphons fall to Varsity Blues ending win-streak


Nov. 20: Toronto 80 - Guelph 65   

TORONTO - The win streak stopped for the Gryphon women's basketball team tonight as they were defeated 80-65 by the CIS No. 7 University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

 

The Gryphon's record drops to 3-3 on the season and they sit tied with McMaster for fifth with eight points in the West Division while the Varsity Blues improve to 5-2 and sit atop the OUA East Division.

 

The Blues got out to a narrow 16-12 lead after the first quarter. The Gryphons suffered a poor second quarter where Toronto outscored them by 10 points (21-11), allowing the Blues to go up 14 at the half. The teams played even for the third and fourth quarters. After a low-scoring third quarter, both teams exploded for a combined 59 points in the final frame. U of T maintained a solid 10-point gap throughout the game to secure the win.

Leading scorers for the Gryphons were Sam Russell (Paradise Valley, AZ) with 16 points and nine rebounds, Jasmine Douglas (Guelph, Ont.) and Alex Yallin contributed 10 points each.

Guelph completes the interlock part of the schedule next Friday and Saturday with Laurentian and York respectively. Game time is 6pm both nights at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre.
