The Guelph Gryphons matched up against the UOIT Ridgeback's this afternoon (Oct 24) in Guelph on the Varsity Field. The Ridgeback's struggled to keep up with the Gryphons on all angles, as the Gryphons cruised to the 11-0 victory.
Not only will these 11 goals help personal statistics for the Gryphons, the final win of the regular season brings them up to a 5-8-3 standing. The Gryphons finish the season fifth in the OUA West and will travel to play Laurier in the first round of the OUA playoffs. The Golden Hawks finished the season fourth with a 7-3-6 regular season record. Game time and details are not yet available.
The first half started in the right direction with the first goal of the game by team captain Robbie Murphy (Ottawa, ON) during the fourth minute. He then scored a second goal, eight minutes into the game off of a corner. Jurgen Koehler (Guelph, ON) scored the Gryphon's third goal during the fifteenth minute and Robbie added to the tally one more, after a penalty kick.
David Canavan (Niagara Falls, ON) helped keep Guelph's defence working as a unit and was able to deny any Ridgeback attempt on Gryphon net. Colin MacMillan (Newmarket, ON) fired in the fifth goal of the game with less than two minutes left of the first half. Tempers seemed to rise from the Ridgeback's and their frustrations were directed to both Guelph players and the referees – resulting with a number of yellow cards and a player being kicked off with a red card.
The Ridgeback's were able to hold off the Gryphons for the first twenty minutes of the second half. Then, Dena Iezady (Richmond Hill, ON) broke the temporary stalemate with a goal off of a free kick outside of the Ridgeback's net. MacMillan ripped the seventh goal of the game only five minutes later. With very little defensive support, the Ridgeback's goal-keep Oliver Lietz (Mississauga, ON) who had been subbed in for the second half, had very few options while he was consecutively riddled with shots.
During the last ten minutes, the game truly fell apart for the Ridgebacks. Gryphon defenseman Andrew Firth (Palgrave, ON) fired a shot outside of Lietz's grasp and minutes later MacMillan scored his third, and the teams ninth goal. The last two goals were scored consecutively by Max Bair-Marshall (Ottawa, ON) who had been subbed in during the second half.
The game finished an astonishing 11-0 for the Gryphons – a good way to end a season well-worked for.
