Guelph, York play to 2-2 draw

Oct. 23: Guelph 2 – York 2

YORKThe men's soccer team tied the York Lions 2-2 this afternoon at York.  Guelph entered the game on an impressive run of four wins in the last five games. Guelph's record moves to 4-8-3 while the Lions move to 11-2-2.

The York Lions entered the contest with a perfect 6-0-0 record at home and were vying to clinch top spot in the OUA west with a win. The game started evenly, but York jumped out to an early lead when they scored a well-taken goal in the Guelph box. Guelph leveled the score through Brendan Springer (Burlington, Ont.) off a corner kick, powerfully headed in past the York keeper. The Gryphons managed to cope well with York's passing style, but York scored right before the end of the first half off a free kick to go into half with a 2-1 lead.

In the early stages of the second half, York dominated possession but Guelph stayed composed and patient, and maintained their shape well. As the game wore on, Guelph found their way back in and created one or two chances before tying the game in the 85th minute through top goal scorer and team co-captain Robbie Murphy (Ottawa).  It was his fifth goal of the season.

The Gryphons are now the only team to take points from York at home.  They go into the last game of the season tomorrow (Oct. 24) against UOIT, with a shot at reaching their goal of making playoffs.

Tomorrow's game at Varsity Field will be the last appearances for four fifth year players for Guelph.
