The Guelph Gryphon men's soccer team matched up against the Laurier Golden Hawks this afternoon (Oct. 13), at Alumni Stadium in Guelph. The game finished 3-2 in Guelph's favour, giving the Gryphons their much anticipated second win of the season.
This brings the Gryphons to an improved 2-8-2 standing, and leaves Laurier with 6-3-4.
Arthur Berlin (Aurora, ON) scored the Gryphons first goal of the game less than four minutes into the first half, after he fired a shot into the back of the Golden Hawk's net. Donald Chmura (Waterloo, ON) had a number of shots on Guelph net during the first half; all which were stopped by Gryphon goal-keep Bryndon Fry (Pickering, ON).
The first half fell apart for the Gryphons 35 minutes into the game. Sandro Stojakovic (Waterloo, ON) scored Laurier's first goal, and two minutes later Eric Stainton (Markham, ON) scored their second.
The Gryphons made it pretty clear in the second half that they were not ready to give up this game. 58 minutes into the game Spiros Maimonis (Oakville, ON) took a penalty shot in the Golden Hawks end, and it deflected off of Laurier's Eamonn Hardy (Kitchener, ON) straight into his own net – tying up the game.
Then, ten minutes later Jurgen Koehler (Guelph, ON) fired a powerful header straight into the Laurier net, bringing the score up to 3-2. The Gryphons held it together for the remainder of the match against the current third place West Division team, and were able to proudly add another win to their standings after a game well-earned.
The Gryphons next play the Waterloo Warriors in Waterloo on Oct. 17th. The game will begin at 3:15pm.
