After an incredible rookie season in 2014-15, early indications from Andrew D'Agostini in the 2015-16 season suggest that there will be no "sophomore slump" here. The second year goalie for the Gryphons Men's Hockey team earns Gryphon Athlete of the Week honours after a pair of impressive performances this past week. On Saturday night in his team's home opener, D'Agostini stole the show by turning away all 40 shots sent his way and led his Gryphons to a 1-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors. In the third period alone, the Scarborough native made 23 saves to help the Gryphons pick up their first win of the 2015-16 season. Two nights earlier in 2-1 loss in Toronto against Ryerson, D'Agostini was also impressive as he turned away 31 of the 33 shots sent his way. In that game, D'Agostini also made a big save on a penalty shot in the opening minutes of the game. The Rams needed some luck to beat D'Agostini that night as the winning goal took an unluck deflection off of a Gryphon defender and in.
For D'Agostini, the hot start to this season should come as no surprise as last season, the list of personal accomplishments grew quite large for D'Agostini:
- Named to OUA West All-Rookie Team
- Named Top Goalie at the CIS Championships in Halifax (University Cup)
- Walter Rickard Memorial Award as Rookie of the Year on the Men's Hockey team
- Recipient of the Scott Yanchus Award as U of G's Male Rookie of the Year
D'Agostini and the rest of the Gryphons will get another crack at the Ryerson Rams on Thursday (Oct. 22) when they play host to the Rams at the Gryphon Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm. That game can be seen live online at OUA.tv and will also be televised on Rogers TV Cable 20 with a tape delayed airing of 10pm on Thursday night.
