Fourth year fullback Alex King earns Gryphon Athlete of the Week honours after leading the Gryphons to a 48-7 victory over the Queen's Gales on Friday (Oct. 9) in what was a highly anticipated matchup between two of the top teams in the country. King led all scorers in that match with 21 points, helping to the Gryphons cap off an undefeated regular season (5-0). With that win over the Gaels, the Gryphons also moved up to top spot in the CIS rankings, marking the first time since September of 2013 that the Gryphons held to title of the No. 1-ranked team in the national rankings.
For Alex, the 21-point performance versus Queen's marks her latest accomplishment in what has been a phenomenal 2015 season. The Zoology major currently leads the CIS in scoring with an incredible 121 points on the season. What is even more impressive is the fact that Alex was asked to play two different positions versus Queen's following an injury to teammate and veteran outside centre Sam Roy. As head coach Colette McAuley notes, "Alex has been performing consistently for us all season at both fullback and centre, depending on the needs of the team and the game plan." Thanks to the steady foot and impressive pace off the ball, "Kinger" - as she's known to her teammates, was able to score 2 tries, 4 converts and 1 penalty kick in what was a statement victory for the Gryphons over the then-No. 2 Queen's Gaels. Alex and her teammates will now get set for an OUA Quarter-final matchup on Saturday, October 17 at 12pm when they play host to the Brock Badgers at Varsity Field.
