Third-year wrestler John Fitzgerald earned a CIS gold medal in the men’s 130kg category at the 2013 CIS Championships this past weekend in London. The Cambridge native struck gold for the Gryphons, defeating University of Alberta’s Jamie Hoffman with scores of 3-0 and 2-0 in the final match. The Philosophy major worked very hard this season to achieve his title and he did so in a convincing fashion. He was also named a First-Team All-Canadian. Fitzgerald was also awarded the R.W. Pugh Fair Play award at the Championships. This is an award given to the wrestler that the coaches and referees feel demonstrated the most fair play at all the events through the year.
