T&F: Gryphon women crowned OUA Champions, men 2nd


WINDSOR, ON - When the dust settled on the 2016 OUA Track & Field Championships, the Gryphons women's team were conference champions, the men's team was 2nd in the team standings, and the Gryphons had reached the podium a total of 27 times (6 Gold, 12 Silver & 9 Bronze). The two day event was held at the University of Windsor and concluded on Saturday.

It was a convincing victory in the team title race for the Gryphon women who finished 47 points ahead of the CIS No. 1-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues. The title is the Gryphons third in the last four years. The Gryphon men gave the hometown and CIS No. 1-ranked Windosr Lancers a good battle but fell 31 points short in their quest to defend their OUA title.

Among the 27 medals for the Gryphons were gold medalists Sean Cate (men's high jump) and Jared Skeath (men's weight throw) both of whom broke their school records in the process.  Cate cleared 2.19 in the high jump, while Skeath joined the elite club of 20 metre weight throwers with a 20.08 toss. Other Gryphon gold medalists at the meet were Katrina Allison (3000m), Jackson Cheung (60 hurdles), Christian Gravel (1500m) and Leah Robinson (Ambulatory 60m). 

The Gryphons boasted seven athletes who captured mulitiple medals at the Championships. Leading the group with three individual medals was Katelyn Ayers who earned silver in the 600 & 1000m events while also claiming a bronze in the 1500m. Sophie Watts also grabbed three medals, silvers in the 1500 metres and 4 x 800 metre relay followed by a bronze in the 1000m. Christian Gravel added a bronze in the 3000 metres to his 1500 gold, while Jared Skeath added a shot put bronze to his weight throw gold. Kyle Thompson won a pair of silver medals in the 60 metres and 4 x 200 relay. Olivia Romaniw won a bronze in the 600 metres and was part of the silver medal winning 4 x 800 metre relay and Ashley Connell captured a pair of bronze medals in the weight throw and shot put.

The Gryphons will be back in action in two weeks at the CIS Track and Field Championships at York University.
