OUA Curling Championships – Gryphon women win Bronze, qualify for CIS Championships

Guelph, ON – The Gryphon women's curling team won bronze on home ice this past week (Feb. 19-23) at the OUA Curling Championships held at the Guelph Curling Club.  In doing so, Skip Katelyn Wasylkiw, vice Jestyn Murphy, second Emily Walsh and lead Heather Cridland have now booked a spot in the CIS/CCAA Curling Championships which will be host by Wilfrid Laurier March 18-21 in Waterloo.

The Gryphon women's team made a statement early on at the OUA Championships, with dominating wins over both Western and Waterloo, by scores of 7-1 and 5-2 respectively.  The Gryphons would finish round-robin Pool B play in second place with a 4-2 record (Laurier finished ahead of them at 5-1).  Sunday night (Feb. 22) in their quarter-final game against the University of Toronto, the Gryphons cruised to a 7-3 victory, marking the fifth straight year the Gryphons have reached the OUA semi-finals.  Monday morning (Feb. 23) in the semi's, the Gryphons would face a tough opponent in the Brock Badgers, who were undefeated in round-robin play.  The Gryphons would fall just short against Brock, losing 4-2, and would face Carleton in the OUA bronze medal game with a spot at nationals up for grabs.

The Gryphons trailed 7-5 after the seventh end, but were able to tie things up with two in the eighth, followed with another two in the bonus ninth to steal the win and book their spot in the CIS Championships.
