WHAT IS THE FROSTY MUG?
"The Frosty Mug" refers to the Gryphons annual men's varsity hockey game which is played at the Sleeman Centre in mid-January. This event has been labelled the
Gryphons Winter Homecoming and is a chance for students, alumni, families, faculty, staff and corporate partners to re-connect with the University of Guelph. In January of 2015, over 3,000 fans were in attendance to cheer on the Gryphons to a 6-4 win over Brock in what was the largest crowd in Frosty Mug history. Having this game take place off campus and in the heart of the community is an important step for Gryphon Athletics in helping further cultivate the connection between the University community and the City of Guelph community. The support that the Gryphons have received from both the U of G student body as well as the larger Guelph community as a whole continues to grow with each passing year.Â
"The Frosty Mug" hockey game also serves as an opportunity for Gryphon Athletics to provide a limited number of free tickets to the four associations who have joined forces with the Gryphons to create "Junior Gryphon" partnerships (
GMHA,
GGHA,
GMFA &
GYBA). While the fan experience at this event is second-to-none, so too is the quality of the hockey that fans get to witness on the ice. With over 30 former CHL players (OHL, WHL & QMJHL) on the ice between the two teams, the level of hockey is second-to-none in the area. Also, when the Gryphons take the ice on Thursday, January 14 for the 2016 Frosty Mug, they will be doing so as the defending OUA champions after having
captured the Queen's Cup in March of 2015.
