Guelph, ON - "Trending in the right direction." That was the phrase used by
Brandon McLeod, the first year Head Golf Coach at the University of Guelph, regarding his team's overall performance so far in 2015. On Monday (October 5) at their home course of Cutten Fields, the Gryphons Men's Golf team finished 2nd out of 10 schools in the overall team standings at the one-day
Gryphon Invitational tournament. With that result, the Gryphons Men's team has now reached the podium at each of their three events this season following third place finishes at both the Western and Toronto Invitationals in September.
In total, 12 Gryphon golfers teed it up on Monday at Cutten Fields (10 Men, 2 Women). Despite overcast skies and a light drizzle early in the morning, conditions at tee time were nearly perfect for this time of the year as temperatures hovered around 17 degrees with almost no wind to speak of. The Men's format for Monday's competition was as follows: each team is asked to select 5 golfers whose score will be added together (with the highest score of those 5 golfers being thrown out, and only the top 4 being tallied). The 5 Gryphons Men's golfers selected on Monday were
Josh Polisuk,
Scott Banks,
Jacob Lehman,
Marc-Anthony Manion and
Nick Striker. Of that group, Polisuk led the way with a 72 followed closed behind by 2014 OUA All-Star Scott Banks with a 73. Lehman and Manion both fired 74's while Striker finished with a 78. The Gryphons team score of 293 was a stroke better than Laurier and Western, giving the Gryphons a 2nd place finish in the team standings.
Jack Shoreman, a rookie on the Gryphon Golf team, fired an impressive 72 to join Polisuk in the Top 10 of the overall individual scoring leaders. Fellow rookie
Patrick Alves was coming off an impressive performance at the UW/WLU Invitational. In gael force winds Saturday at Rebel Creek, Alves shot a spectacular round of 70 - leading the field. On Monday, Alves showed some nice form once again as he finished with a 73. Third year Guelph native
David Fell was also coming off an impressive weekend after shooting a blistering 65 at Grey Silo on Sunday. On Monday at Cutten, Fell posted a 77 while teammates
Trevor Whiton (74), Nick Striker (78) and
Nick Freeman (79) rounded out the scoring for the Gryphons.
On the Women's side, the Gryphons technically did not qualify for the overall team score (as a mimimum of 3 players are required to post scores) - but individually, both
Madeline Decorso and
Breanna Shannon posted their best scores of the year with an 89 and 92 respectively.
Up next for the Gryphons Golf teams, a trip to Dundas for the McMaster Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
