There is a new face in the Gryphon backfield in 2019 with first-year man Kaine Stevenson winning the starting running back job right out of training camp.Â
The 6-0, 212 pound arts major from Windsor, Ontario gave Gryphon fans a glimpse of his bright future with a monster performance in Guelph's Week 4 trip to Waterloo to face the Warriors. Stevenson spearheaded the Gryphon offence in a 39-13 victory, finishing the game with 21 carries for 194 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Â
Stevenson pickec up the first touchdown of his OUA career in the 2nd quarter, punching it in from three-yards out to cap a 75-yard drive. In the 3rd quarter, Kaine would once again cap off a long scoring drive by the Gryphons, this time taking it in from a yard out to give Guelph a 17-10 lead. After the Warriors trimmed the deficit to 17-13, Stevenson would respond once more, this time ripping off a 36-yard touchdown run early in the 4th quarter to put the Gryphons up 24-13 with his third TD of the day.
Â
Through four games this season, Stevenson ranks 5th among the OUA's leading rushers with 323 yards on the ground (an average of 80.8 yards rushing per game). Those totals also make him the OUA's leading rusher among rookies, and tied for 10th in the country in rushing yards per game with Western's Trey Humes.Â
