Leslie & Jarvis Golden at CIS Championships

The Guelph Gryphon men's wrestling team placed fifth, while the women were 8th as the 2011 CIS Championships came to a close on Saturday night in Thunder Bay, hosted by Lakehead.

The Gryphons earned an impressive total of five medals at the Championships. The women's team earned two medals, while the men tallied three medals.

The men's team finished with 34 points.  Concordia came out on top on the men's side with 55 points.  The Gryphon women tallied 22 points while Alberta won the title with 47 points in total.

Leading the Gryphon women was fourth year Human Kinetics major Allison Leslie (Fergus, Ont.) who won her first ever CIS gold in the 67kg weight class.

Rookie Jade Papke (Mississauga, Ont.) was the silver medalist in the women's 48 kg weight class.  Jade was also named the CIS rookie of the year for her impressive performance at the Championships.  Another Gryphon rookie, Kelsey Gsell placed well, finishing fifth.

On the men's side the Gryphons were led by rookie Korey Jarivs (Elliot Lake, Ont.) a first year General Arts student who captured the CIS gold medal in the men's 90kg weight class.

Second year Jake Jagas (Kitchener, Ont.) was the silver medalist in the men's 76 kg weight class after losing a very close final match with Connor Molloy of Regina.

John Fitzgerald was the bronze medalist in the men's 130kg weight class. This was John's first CIS appearance. Rounding out the results from the men's team was second year Mathieu Deschateles (Sturgeon Falls, Ont.) who placed fifth while Daniel Greenacre (Paris, Ont.) and Bobby Fillman (Milton, Ont.) both finished seventh.  Kevin Iwasa-Madge (Milton, Ont.) unfortunately only wrestled one match and was pulled out of the event due to an injury.
