SWIMMING - Gryphons Compete at McMaster Event


Women's Results:
The Guelph Gryphon women's swimming team was at McMaster on Saturday for a meet against the Marauders the Brock Badgers. Two of the women's CIS qualifiers are undefeated in their events so far this season. Second year Chantique Payne (Brantford, Ont.), crushed the competition in the women's 50 m butterfly, by over one second, posting a 28.5 sec for the race. Payne helped the women win the 4 X 50 medley relay and the 4 X 100 free relay against McMaster and Brock.

Rookie sensation Mairi Cote (Kentville, Ont.) created two different 1-2 punches for the Gryphons. Cote won the 200IM with Alex Loh (Oakville, Ont.) finishing right behind her, and winning the 200breast with Alexis Jordan (Ajax, Ont.) coming in second. Jordan also won the 50 breaststroke. Alex Loh won the 200backstroke with rookie Hayleigh Conway (Ottawa, Ont.) touching right after her.

Men's Results:
The men competed at McMaster on Saturday (Nov. 1) against the Marauders and Brock Badgers. Highlighting the event was Guelphs men's team winning the 4 x 50 medley relay and Matthew Stephenson ( Brantford, Ont.) remaining undefeated in the 200 breaststroke this season.

Overall the Gryphon men went 1-2 in the 200 and 50m breaststroke with Stephenson finishing first, followed by Cameron Mackendrick (Markham, Ont.) in second.

Jordan Duggan (Cambridge, Ont.) stole the show with his great kickouts and crushed the competition by over three seconds in the 200backstroke. Duggan also won the 200Im with rookie Chris Miller (Ottawa, Ont.) placing third, almost running down the Mac competitor in the last 25 meters.

The Men's team almost doubled their points from this competition from a year ago. Two of our CIS qualifiers were on the sidelines with injuries, they should be ready for Divisionals in two weeks.
