Gryphon Hall of Fame History

The Gryphon Hall of Fame began in 1984 when the Gryphon Club recognized the need to honour the many athletes and builders who had made outstanding contributions to Athletics at the University of Guelph.

Discussions had started a year earlier and the club worked diligently to construct a formula and criteria for the Hall of Fame. The initial year saw 12 athletes and four builders inducted.

Candidates are considered on the basis of playing ability, sportsmanship, character and exemplification of the spirit and ideals of the University of Guelph.

Nominations may be submitted to Sam Kosakowski, the Hall of Fame Selection Committee Chairperson, at any time and should contain the fullest possible data concerning the record and merit of each candidate. The record of the individual must be so outstanding that there is no question of his or her qualifications for the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is administered by a Steering Committee to whom the Selection Committee of the Hall makes its recommendations.

Since 1984, the induction ceremony was held each fall in conjunction with Homecoming. In 2009, the Steering Committee decided to hold the Hall of Fame event every 2 years in conjunction with Homecoming. The University of Guelph has a young history, and as a result, the committee does not want to lessen the calibre of the inductees previously selected by diminishing the pool of talented athletes and teams too quickly. The next Hall of Fame Induction will be held in June of 2024.

To date, 193 athletes, 44 builders and 40 teams have been elected to the Hall. Plaques of the athletes and builders bearing their pictures and highlighting their accomplishments are displayed in the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre at the University of Guelph.
