OAKVILLE, Ont. – For just the 10th time in University of Guelph history, a Guelph Gryphon student-athlete has been named 'OUA Athlete of the Year.' Olivia Rizakos, a standout forward on the Gryphons women's soccer team, has been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Women's Athlete of the Year for the 2025-26 season, with TMU Bold basketball player Aaron Rhooms taking home Athlete of the Year honours on the men's side. The conference-wide award was announced on Wednesday evening (May 13, 2026) at the OUA's year-end 'Honour Awards' banquet in Oakville. GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons celebrated the best and brightest from a memorable 2024-25 season by holding the annual Gryphons Athletics Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. MONTREAL, Que. - For the first time in program history, the Guelph Gryphons men's rugby team will play for a national gold medal. Friday evening (Nov. 14, 2025) at the 2025 Canadian University Men's Rugby Championships, the Gryphons defeated the UBC Thunderbirds, 13-7, in a national semifinal matchup in Montreal. With the win, the Gryphons advance to the gold medal match on Sunday (5pm). It marks the first time in program history in which the Gryphons have reached the national gold medal final, with this year marking the ninth year of existence of the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championships, which were first launced back in 2017. Guelph's previous best result at the national championship tournament was 3rd-place (accomplished in both 2022 and 2023). But Friday night's hard-fought victory over UBC guarantees the Gryphons of their best-ever result at the tournament. Alexandra McDougall from the Guelph Gryphons women's cross country team and Owen Williams of the U of G men's rugby team has earned 'OUA Athlete of the Week' honours for the period covering November 3 to 9.
