GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team took Game 1 of their best-of-three OUA semifinal series versus the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, with Guelph skating to a 3-0 victory on Wednesday night (March 4) at the Gryphon Centre Arena. Just three days after securing a dramatic, triple overtime victory over the Waterloo Warriors in the OUA quarterfinals, the Gryphons returned to their home ice to drop the puck on their best-of-three with the upstart Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. Ontario Tech arrived in Guelph fresh off of an upset over the OUA East's top-ranked Queen's Gaels in their quarterfinal series, but it was the Gryphons who were able to take the lead early on in Game 1 on Wednesday night.
Gryphons second-year forward,
Myriam Parnell (Guelph, ON, opened the scoring midway through the 1st period with a perfectly-placed shot off the crossbar and in past Ridgebacks goalie Zoe McGee, to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead. Guelph would double their lead midway through the 2nd period, when third-year forward Katie Dance (Aylmer, ON) showed some quick hands in front of the net to score on her own rebound to give the Gryphons a 2-0 lead. That would prove to be more than enough for Gryphons fifth-year goalie,
Martina Fedel (Trento, Italy), who turned away all 16 shots sent her way for the shutout. Fedel's best save of the night came with 7 minutes remaining in the 3rd period, where she denied Ontario Tech's Jessica Patterson in close, then scrambled to make a great glove save on the ensuing rebound to deny Milana Perri. Gryphons second-year defender, Maddie Min, would cap the scoring with an empty-net goal with 1:34 remaining as the Gryphons secured the 3-0 win in Game 1.
The series will now shift to Oshawa for Game 2, with Ontario Tech set to host the Gryphons on Friday night (7pm) at the Campus Ice Centre. The winner of this series will not only qualify for the McCaw Cup (OUA championship game), but will also book a spot at nationals, with the 2026 U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championships set to take place March 19-22 in Elmira.
