GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons men's basketball team earned themselves a split on the road over the weekend. Guelph dropped their Friday night (Jan. 16) matchup to the Queen's Gaels before rebounding on the following night in the win over Ontario Tech.
Friday, Jan. 16, 2025 | Gryphons Unable to Hold Off Second Half Surge from Gaels
On Friday night in Kingston, it was a tale of two halves for the Gryphons where they had a strong opening half of action but were unable to regain the momentum in the second half as the Gaels picked up the 94-72 win. The Gryphons got out to a fast start in the opening quarter, outscoring Queen's 18-10 as they would build on their lead taking a 12 point halftime lead. The second half would see the Gaels turn the game around, outscoring the Gryphs 32-15 in the third quarter to lead by five. Guelph was in the game for most of the night, but Queen's would go on an 18-2 run midway through the fourth that would seal the victory for the hosts. The Gryphons were led by
Jack Tunstill's 16 point, 11 rebound double-double and
Mazen Yagubi's 16 points off the bench.
Saturday, Jan. 17, 2025 | Gryphons Deliver Bounce Back Performance in Win over Ridgebacks
The Gryphons just like they did in Kingston were able to get off to a good start in Oshawa, outscoring Ontario Tech 22-8 in the opening quarter as they were able to make their lead hold up in their 57-48 victory over the Ridgebacks. The Guelph defence impressed in the win in their best performance of the season, holding the Ridgebacks to 34.6% shooting from the field, 3-14 from three and forced 26 turnovers with 15 of those turnovers, steals. It was the fewest points the team allowed in a game this season and held Ontario Tech to their lowest point total as well. Ten Gryphons recorded a basket in a balanced scoring attack led by
Jack Tunstill's 13 points.
The Gryphons (8-8) return to the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre for a Wednesday night (Jan. 21) matchup with the Laurier Golden Hawks in their only game this week.
