RICHMOND HILL, Ont. - For the first time during the 2018 football season, a Guelph Gryphon has garnered national honours. On Wednesday (Sept. 5), the U SPORTS Football Players of the Week were announced, with Gryphons' fifth-year kicker
Gabe Ferraro earning the title of U SPORTS Special Teams Player of the Week. Ferraro receives the honour after a standout performance versus the York Lions on Labour Day Monday in which he helped lead U of G to a 33-18 victory by going a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals.
U SPORTS Football Players of the Week (Week 2)
Offence: Adam Sinagra, quarterback, Calgary
Defence: Benjamin Carré, defensive back, McGill
Special Teams: Gabe Ferraro, kicker/punter, Guelph
The Gryphons' two-time All-Canadian kicker also impressed by averaging 41-yards per punt, while pinning York inside their own 20-yard line on three separate occasions. The Mississauga native, who last season set a U SPORTS single-season record with 33 made field goals, was the lone kicker to be selected in the 2018 CFL Draft back in May. After attending Calgary Stampeders training camp in the spring, Ferraro returned to the University of Guelph for his senior season this August and was in fine form in his team's second game of the season, connecting on field goals of 29, 42, 29 and 47-yards in Guelph's Week 2 win over York. Ferraro, who was named U SPORTS Special Teams Player of the Week on two different occasions during the 2017 season, will now help lead the No. 8-ranked Guelph Gryphons (1-1) into Ottawa as they prepare to hit the road for a Week 3 matchup against the No. 9-ranked Gee-Gees (1-1). Kickoff is set for 1pm on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Gee-Gees' Field and can be seen live online at oua.tv.
