Jestyn Murphy (WCURL) named Gryphon Athlete of the Week

GUELPH, ON - Jestyn Murphy (women's curling) has been named Gryphon Athlete of the Week for the period ending March 27, 2016.

Murphy, a second year Biological Sciences student from Mississauga, led the Gryphons women's curling team to their first ever podium finish at that national level with a bronze medal finish at the 2016 CIS-Curling Canada University Championships in Kelowna, B.C. Murphy, the Gryphons skip, made clutch shots throughout the course of the four-day tournament (March 20-23) and was rewarded by being named a CIS Second Team All-Canadian. The Gryphons, who entered the 8-team tournament as the lowest seeded team in the field, found themselves sitting in 1st place overall after posting an impressive 5-2 record during the round robin portion of the draw. Murphy led the way for the Gryphons during the team's strong play during the round robin, including an incredible performance in a comeback victory in the team's final round robin game against the University of New Brunswick. Trailing 8-1 after 4 ends, the Gryphons mounted a comeback for the ages that ended with the Gryphons coming out on top 10-9.

In the playoffs, Murphy and the Gryphons bounced back from a semi-final defeat versus Alberta to defeat Dalhousie 11-7 to claim the bronze medal.

This marked Jestyn's second trip to the podium in 2016 after having also earned a bronze at the OUA Championships which were hosted by Guelph.
