GATINEAU, QC – A total of 16 University of Guelph student-athletes, five on the men's side and 11 on the women's, took part in the three-day OUA Nordic Skiing Championships hosted by the Carleton Ravens in Gatineau, Quebec this weekend (Feb. 19-21). For the first time in four years, the Gryphons were able to reach the podium at the OUA Championships as the U of G women's team took home Bronze medals by finishing third out of nine schools in the overall team standings. The Gryphons men's team finished seventh out of nine schools on the men's side.
Leading the way for the Gryphons women's team was fourth year athlete
Ashley Huet who on Day 1 of the competition finished 10
th out of 46 skiiers in the women's 7.5km interval. On Day 2, Ashley joined forces with her sister
Elise as well as
Maria Hudec to finish 5
th out of 9 schools in the women's 3x2.7km relay. Finally, on Day 3 of the competition, Ashley Huet earned a 9
th place finish out of 50 skiiers in the women's 10km mass start. Huet was the only Gryphon, on either the men's or women's side, to earn OUA All-Star honours.
On the Women's side, the host Carleton Ravens were able to snap Lakehead's 11-year reign as conference champions as the Ravens claimed their first OUA banner since 2004. While on the Men's side, Lakehead took home their fourth OUA title in the last five years.
