Geneva, Ohio - University of Guelph runner
Ross Proudfoot finished off the regular season of his varsity career with a bang becoming the fastest ever CIS runner over 3000 metres with his clocking of 7 minutes 53.02 seconds to win the Spire D1 Invitational in Geneva, Ohio. Proudfoot blew away the field in the final kilometre to win the race by over four seconds. Proudfoot's teammate
Aaron Hendrikx was close behind in fourth place in 7 minutes 58.11 seconds. The Gryphons had a string of outstanding performances at the meet in addition to Proudfoot and Hendrikx, as three other Gryphons bettered CIS automatic qualifying marks.
Katelyn Ayers and
Sophie Watts both bettered the standard in the women's 1000 metres. Ayers crossed the line in third place in a time of 2 minutes 45.36 seconds with Watts right behind in 2 minutes 46.12 seconds,
Heather Petrick bettered the equivalent time in her one mile race with her time of 4 minutes 46.11 seconds.
Other highlight performances for the Gryphons were
Drew Anderson's 2:24.00 clocking in the men's 1000 metres a time that ranks him 9
th in the CIS,
Kyle Grieve was right behind Anderson with a 2:24.24 time, in the women's 1000
Carise Thompson's ran 2:48.01 ranking her 10
th in the country,
Jenn Dowling-Medley recorded a massive personal best in the women's 3000 running 9 minutes 42.72 seconds, she currently sits 16
th in the country.
The Gryphons also had athletes in action at the Windsor Team Challenge this weekend. The results were highlighted by huge vertical jumps performances.
Sean Cate won the men's high jump 2.12 metres, moving him to the top of the CIS rankings and narrowly missing the school record.
Maja Naruscewicz won the women's high jump in 1.73 metres a mark that ranks her third in the CIS. In the women's pole vault
Alison Fung and
Samantha Allegro both cleared 3.77 moving them up into a tie for fourth nationally. Rounding out the Gryphons' season best performances was
Ashley Connell's 14.46 mark in the shot put, ranking her third in the CIS.
The Gryphons are back in action this weekend at the Last Chance Meet Saturday at home. The OUA Championships begin next Friday at York University.
