FH: Gryphons Take Home OUA Silver Medal After 4-3 Loss to Toronto in Gold Medal Game

Toronto, ON - The Gryphons Field Hockey team took home OUA silver medals on Saturday after suffering a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues in the gold medal game of the 2015 OUA Field Hockey Championship tournament at U of T. Both Toronto and Guelph advance to the upcoming CIS Championships, November 5-8, at the University of Victoria. Toronto defeated the York Lions, 3-0, and Guelph topped the Waterloo Warriors, 4-0, in semi-final action on Friday to earn a spot in the final.
 
The Gryphons got out to an early lead as forward Allison Chute found the back of the net in the 6th minute and sophomore standout Olivia Lane put Guelph up by two just one minute later. The Gryphons first half lead would grow to 3-0 in the 15th minute when Chute scored her second of the game as the Gryphons were off to a flying start. However, the Blues got on the board two minutes after the Chute goal to trim the deficit to 3-1. U of T rookie forward Sarah Pendreigh would also find the back of the net as Guelph's lead was trimmed to 3-2 heading into halftime.
 
Both teams went back and forth in the second half until U of T was able to come through late with a pair of goals from fifth year forward Amanda Woodcroft in the 51st and 55th minutes respectively as the Varsity Blues pulled out the 4-3 victory for their fourth OUA banner in the past five seasons. This meeing marked the ninth time in the past 11 years that U of T and Guelph have met in the OUA final.
 
The Waterloo Warriors claimed the bronze medal with a narrow 1-0 victory over the York Lions.
