Gryphons open season with a 45-3 victory against Badgers


Guelph, Ont. (September 3, 2014) - The University of Guelph Gryphons men's rugby team opened their season with an impressive 45-3 victory against the Brock Badgers on Wednesday night at Varsity Field. 
 
"It was a solid team performance tonight and we are happy with the result," said head coach Darrell Devine. "There is a quick turn around until next game so we look forward to getting back to work in preparations."
 
11240The Gryphons opened up scoring early on in the first half scoring a try and a successful convert to make it 7-0 against the Badgers. The Gryphons would score again shortly after with another try and a conversion to make it 14-0. Guelph was able to keep possession of the ball, keeping Brock from setting up a scoring opportunity.
 
However, Brock was able to gain momentum before the end of the half scoring a penalty goal making it 14-3 for the Gryphons. Guelph responded shortly after with another try and a successful conversion to make it 21-3 going into the break.
 
Guelph continued their momentum scoring shortly into the second half of the game making it 28-3 very early on. Brock would start to gain some speed later on in the second half of the game, but the Gryphons were able to keep possession of the ball and maintain the physicality of play to keep the Badgers from putting any more points on the board.
 
Jeremy Wright (Fenelon Falls, Ont.) and Adam Maahs (Port Perry, Ont.) would end the game with two tries each, leading the team in scoring. Joe Newman (Waterdown, Ont.) would closely follow with four conversions, totaling eight points for the Gryphons. Eric Howard (Ottawa, Ont.), Taylor Zak (Oshawa, Ont.), and Martin Damianoff (Guelph, Ont.) would score a try each, with Nathaniel Stein (Guelph, Ont.) successfully converting once to contribute to the 45-3 final for the Gryphons.
 
The Gryphons hit the field again Sunday, September 7th against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in Toronto with the game set to start at 1:00 p.m.
