Guelph 23, Nipissing 8
Â
North Bay, Ont. (September 28, 2014) - The Gryphon men's lacrosse team travelled to North Bay today and delivered a resounding 23-8 loss to Nipissing University. Only their second of the season, the win moves the Gryphons into fifth place in the CUFLA West Division.
Â
Following a goal at the 2:30 mark of the first quarter by veteran attackman
Seamus Shanahan (Mississauga, Ont.) the Gryphons went on a 12-0 scoring run that took them into the second quarter. The team's offence seemingly scored at will. At the other end of the field, the Gryphon defense limited Nipissing to just one shot in the first quarter that Gryphon goaltender
Michael Lalani (Guelph, Ont.) handled easily. Lalani made a couple more strong saves in close before a couple of defensive lapses midway through the second allowed Nipissing to get on the board and at half time, Guelph held a comfortable 14-3 lead.Â
Â
Tyler MacKendrick (Whitby, Ont.) started the second half in between the pipes for the Gryphons. Guelph was tentative in the third quarter and allowed Nipissing to possess the ball longer and to take more shots. The Gryphons only managed to trade three goals with the Lakers in the third but in the final frame, turned it on again, outscoring their opponent 6-2 on route to their 23-8 win.
Â
Ten Gryphons made their way on the score sheet. Shanahan lead all scorers with five goals and two assists followed by
Ryan Serville (Pickering, Ont.) and
Curtis Knight (Oshawa, Ont.) with four goals and two assists each.
Jordan Critch (Orangeville, Ont.) had two and three while rookie
Liam Corbett (Burlington, Ont.) had four and one.
Daniel McIsaac (Burlington, Ont.) and
Michael Cavanagh (Peterborough, Ont.) each had four points; McIsaac with 3-1 and Cavanaugh with four assists. Rounding out the Gryphon scoring were
Brett Ulbikas (Oakville, Ont.) who had a goal and an assist and
Calvin Holland (Burlington, Ont.) and
Nicholas Wordtmann (Burlington, Ont.) each with an assist.
Â
Wordtman, a longstick defensemen, looked to be auditioning for a role on offence. He had a chance to open the Gryphon scoring in the first minute of the game and close it out in the last minute when he fought for a loose ball, dodged several defenders and had two good rips at the Nipissing net. Unfortunately, both shots were wide of their target. None the less, Wordtman and the rest of the Gryphon defense did a great job on the defensive side of the ball.
Â
Guelph will continue to try to climb out of the depths of the CUFLA West Division standings when they face Laurier at Laurier on Saturday, October 4 at 6pm and then host Nipissing on Sunday, October 5 at 6pm.
