Despite the quiet atmosphere around campus these days, things are moving along with the Department of Athletics extensive two-phase plan for the Mitchell Centre Renovation Project.
Â
We're very happy to announce the opening phase of construction of the renovation project will be underway immediately. Goetz Construction has been hired as the General Contractor for Phase 1a of the project. They will be installing the infrastructure to bring chilled water, mechanical, and electrical services to the new building. They will also be building a new fire route to the west side of the Gryphon Field House from Power House Lane. This work will be starting in May and will be completed by the end of August 2014.
Â
Meanwhile, the Project Building Committee is reviewing RFSQ's (Request for services and qualifications) from General Contractors as well as Mechanical and Electrical sub contractors for Phase 1b of the project. This review will generate a list of pre qualified general and sub contractors who will be given an opportunity to submit a tender on phase 1b of the project. Tender documents will go out August 29th. Phase 1b will involve the construction of the new triple gym, new change rooms, 25,000 square feet of cardio and weight training space, 5 multipurpose spaces, and new client support space.
Â
The 50 year old Mitchell Centre will undergo a massion renovation and 120,000 square foot expansion. The new construction will provide students, faculty and staff a state of the art facility for recreation, intramurals, fitness and varsity sports. It will also provide a first class venue for University events such as convocations, banquets and conferences. The new structure will house a three storey 35,000 sq ft fitness centre and a 2500 seat event centre, with a suspended running track, capable of hosting varsity basketball and volleyball as well as numerous large capacity events such as convocation. A climbing wall will be installed within the fitness centre to accommodate recreational climbers and an auxiliary gymnasium will provide ample space for intramurals and recreation activities.
Completion date is projected to be late fall 2016!
