Jeff Finley selected 22nd overall in CFL Canadian Draft in record night for CIS

OTTAWA (CIS) – University of Guelph defensive lineman Jeff Finley (St. Catharine's, Ont.) was selected in the third round of the 2014 CFL draft on Tuesday night. The fourth year was selected 22nd overall by the Montreal Alouettes. It marks the fifth time in the past six seasons that a Gryphon player has been selected in the Canadian draft.

Finley, a 2013 East West Bowl participant was part of a defensive line that ranked first in the CIS in rushing yards allowed and combined for over two thirds of the Gryphon's sacks with 21.5 this past season. The 6-foot-3, 260lb lineman has played a large role in the team's uprising the last few seasons. In 2012 he started eight games in his second season with the Gryphons and recorded 23 tackles, making his first playoff appearance that season in the team's overtime victory over the Queen's Gaels, qualifying and then making an appearance in the Yates Cup final.

A total of six Gryphons have been drafted in the last six seasons, covering five seasons.
2009 - Brad Crafford, DB, Toronto (6th rd)
2010 - Rob Maver, K, Calgary (1st rd) & Ryan Bomben, G, Montreal (4th rd)
2011 - Jedd Gardner, WR, Toronto (4th rd)
2012 - NA
2013 - Jake Piotrowski, OL, Montreal (5th rd)
2013 - Cameron Thorn, DL, BC (7th rd)
2014 - Jeff Finley, DL, Toronto (3rd rd)

Pierre Lavertu, a centre from Laval University, became the eighth CIS player in as many years – and the 12th in the past 15 years - to be selected first overall in the CFL Canadian Draft when the Calgary Stampeders called his name at No. 1, on Tuesday evening.

It was a record night for CIS football as 59 players from the league were selected out of 65 total picks (90.8%), shattering the previous standard of 44 set a year ago (out of 60 picks). The eight CIS standouts drafted in the opening round also tied the league mark from 1970 and 1972.

Eight more CIS stars were called in each of the second, third and fourth rounds, with nine following in the fifth, seven in the sixth and 11 in the seventh, which included two more picks than the other rounds.

Since 1965 (year of first Vanier Cup championship), 29 CIS players have been chosen with the first pick. All players selected first overall in the first nine CFL Canadian Drafts between 1956 and 1964 were also from schools currently competing in CIS.

The 2014 CFL season gets underway on June 26th.
