London, Ont. (January 22, 2014) - A strong finish to the day launches the Gryphons figure skating team into a tie for first place after the first day of competition at the OUA Winter Invitational in London, Ont.
 
At the halfway point of the competition the Gryphon team sits tied with the Ryerson Rams with a total 40 points. Highlights of the day included a third place skate from rookie pair Kelsey Sobkowich and Leeann Duncan in the senior similar pairs event, and a very convincing end to the day with first place finishes in the three final events.
 
Gold medal skates by Amanda Sproule in the senior silver freeskate, Kelsey Shropshire and Victoria Ambrose in the Senior Similar dance, and Anjuli Dabydeen  Kelsey Sobkowich, Leeann Duncan, and Amanda Sproule in the pairs fours events brought the Gryphon point score from 10 to 40 points late in the afternoon.
 
The team will continue the close competition tomorrow with seven more events, including the synchro team skate – the final event of the competition, also worth the most points.
